1970-1975
Studies in Geology, Mineralogy and Crystallography at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg i. Br.
Diploma thesis on the crystal growth of quaternary chalcogenide-halides (honoured with the Gödecke Research Prize).

1975-1978 
Thesis work on the crystal structure analysis of ionic conductors belonging to the argyrodite family; graduation summa cum laude.

1978-1981 Researcher and assistant (wissenschaftlicher Hochschulassistent) at the Universität Freiburg i. Br.
Participation in the development of a software system for crystal structure analysis (PROMETHEUS) for disordered and anharmonic systems.

1981-1987 Instrument supervisor for the four-circle diffractometer D9 at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble/France. During this time complete
reconstruction of the instrument and improvement of sample environment. Work on ice phases and ferroelectrics as well as a number of other systems.

1987-1993 Researcher and assistant (wissenschaftlicher Hochschulassistent) at the Institut für Kristallographie of the Universität (TH) Karlsruhe. Continuation of structural studies at high gas pressures on ice phases and clathrate hydrates, as well as on ferroelectrics and minerals. Between 1989 and 1992 chairman of the working group neutron scattering of the German Crystallographic Association (DGK, formerly AGKr).

1991 Habilitation in Crystallography at the Faculty of Physics at the Universität (TH) Karlsruhe.

1992 Victor-Moritz-Goldschmidt-Prize of the Deutsche Mineralogische Gesellschaft for the work on ice and ice-related materials.

1993 C4-Chair for Mineralogy/Crystallography at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen.

2000 Offer of the Chair of Crystallography at the LMU/Munich.

2001 Decision to stay at the University of Göttingen.

Recent Research and Advisory Activities:

The longstanding interest in ice, gas-ice-interactions and clathrate hydrates has developed to be the main research activity in Göttingen. The work has been partly financed through various grants from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG ("normal" grants and grants in the programme "Antarktisforschung") as well as through BMBF, PROCOPE and EC-grants. The work undertaken has resulted in the following memberships of international bodies:

In addition to having delivered numerous invited conference papers on ice and clathrate hydrate related topics (e.g., several presentations at Gordon Research Conferences, a keynote on ice and clathrate hydrates at the IUCr-Congress 1999 in Glasgow), I have been a member of the scientific board for the following events:
